Have you heard about Um Ali? Don’t think too much, it is the name of a sweet. The name “Om Ali” is literally translated into the mother of Ali and it is traced back to the Ayyubid era. It is named after the wife of the ruler of the Ayyubid Empire in Egypt who used to make it for her husband.
All this information made us more curious about the dessert and we thought to try it. Calicut always gives you the chance to try all types of food, today we are going to “SWEETSMITH”. Sweetsmith is located in Silk St, Mananchira. A very well organized cute cafe, where you can see the ambience of an Arabian style. We tried three varieties of sweets, but our heart was stuck on one particular dish “Umali”. Yes, as we expected it was really mind blowing and delicious. It actually reminds us about our mothers love and care, it was so sweet and in every bite we can taste the overwhelming flavour of nuts, milk etc.
After the star dish we tried a classic kunafa and mango kunafa. Classic kunafa was filled with cream cheese, and it was good. Then we had a mango kunafa, there we taste a twist in the classic kunafa. The pulp of real mango and small pieces of mango gave kunafa a different angle of taste. But still we were not able to forget our Umali, that was really the best. Below we are mentioning the location and price of each dish.
1. Umali – Rs. 250
2. Classic kunafa – Rs. 275
3. Mango kunafa – Rs. 350
Location – Silk St, Mananchira, Kozhikode, Kerala
